At APU KUNTUR, traditional craftsmanship meets modern European fashion design. Our family business in Cusco, Peru produces exclusive, high-quality clothing and accessories made from alpaca – one of the finest natural fibers in the world. Our many years of experience and commitment to quality can be seen and felt in every piece of our extensive collection.

Nelly Gutknecht-Amachi and her daughters, Prisila and Danna, design all models and collections in their studios in Switzerland. Nelly’s brothers, Juan and Juvenal Amachi, oversee the high-quality production in Peru, following Fair Trade standards. Meanwhile, Matthias Gutknecht is responsible for distribution throughout Europe. Together, they are supported by a team of over 200 employees in Peru and Europe.

Our Facility in Cusco, Peru

Join us in this short documentary as we follow the journey of how an alpaca sweater is made. Our workshop in Cusco opens its doors and offers an inside look at the careful craftsmanship that goes into every single piece.

Our production site is constantly being expanded, renovated, and modernized. In addition to bright, sunlit workspaces and high-quality European knitting machines, we also offer a shared cafeteria and in-house childcare for our employees. Since 2020, we have also run a dedicated training program for hearing-impaired employees.

We warmly invite you: like many of our customers before, if you ever wish to visit us in Cusco, just get in touch. We’ll be happy to arrange a guided tour of our production site for you.

The Remarkable Wearing Properties of Alpaca Fiber

  • Perfect Thermal Properties

    Alpaca wool is naturally structured to protect the animals from heat in summer and cold in winter. The fiber contains tiny hollow spaces that act like a natural air conditioning system. In cold weather, it provides excellent insulation, while in summer, it effectively releases excess heat.

  • Fine, Soft, and Lightweight

    The small fiber diameter gives alpaca wool its incredible lightness. Each hair has a scaly structure similar to that of cashmere, resulting in a pleasantly soft feel without any itchiness. At APU KUNTUR, we exclusively use fibers from the top three fineness grades – namely Superfine, Baby, and Royal Alpaca. That’s what gives our products their elegant sheen and graceful drape.

  • Durable and Hard-Wearing

    Thanks to its long and strong fibers, alpaca fiber offers excellent tear resistance and durability – despite its fineness.

  • Odor-Resistant & Antibacterial

    Compared to other animal fibers, alpaca wool contains very little lanolin (wool fat) and absorbs minimal moisture. This effectively prevents unpleasant odors – even during heavy perspiration and frequent wear. Additionally, the protein molecules in the fiber neutralize bacteria and inhibit their growth.

  • A Rich Variety of Colors

    Alpaca fiber comes in a wide range of natural shades – from ecru to various browns and greys, all the way to natural black. This allows us to reduce or even completely avoid chemical dyeing in some cases – for example, in our undyed yarns and the Natura accessory line.

  • Self-Cleaning, Low-Maintenance, and Minimal Pilling

    If a light odor develops, simply hang the garment out to air – the humidity in the air naturally neutralizes any smell. Thanks to its dirt-repellent properties, the fiber rarely needs washing, making alpaca products exceptionally long-lasting. The fineness of the fiber also means that pilling – the formation of small wool balls – is kept to an absolute minimum.
